The Count Leverage Nobody Talks About
Every K-prop analysis I read focuses on the end of the at-bat — the whiff rate on two-strike pitches, the putaway percentage, the SwStr% on sliders in strikeout counts. Almost nobody talks about the beginning of the at-bat. That is a blind spot. A pitcher who throws a first-pitch strike is immediately in a 0-1 count, which flips the entire at-bat dynamic. The practical application of FS% is about filtering and confirming, not about replacing your existing model. I add FS% as a checkpoint after my primary analysis is complete. If I have identified a K over with positive expected value based on K-rate, opponent K%, and pitch-count projections, I then check the pitcher’s FS% from his last five starts. If it is above 63%, I proceed with full confidence. If it is between 58% and 63%, I proceed but with a reduced stake. If it is below 55%, I either skip the bet or look at the under.
FS% is also useful for evaluating pitchers you are less familiar with. When a pitcher I have not tracked closely shows up with a strong K-rate line and a favourable matchup, checking his FS% gives me a quick read on whether his K-rate is built on a sustainable foundation (getting ahead in counts, creating K opportunities efficiently) or on a more fragile one (relying on batter cooperation in deep counts). A high-K pitcher with high FS% is making his own strikeouts. A high-K pitcher with low FS% is dependent on batters being cooperative, which is less reliable.
One additional application: FS% by count. Some pitchers have markedly different FS% depending on the game situation. Their first-pitch strike rate might be 68% through the first time through the order and 57% the third time through as fatigue sets in and batters adjust.
