The Pitcher Who Changed Mid-Season

A pitcher with a 28% K-rate over 150 innings is expected to produce strikeouts at that rate going forward. The sample is large, the data is stable, and the number feels reliable. But it masks everything that has changed since the first pitch of the season.

Pitchers evolve during a season — sometimes deliberately, sometimes due to fatigue or injury. A pitcher who added a sweeper to his repertoire in June is not the same pitcher he was in April. His full-season K-rate blends the pre-sweeper version and the post-sweeper version into a single number that accurately describes neither. The analytical principle here is straightforward: when recent data diverges from long-term data, the divergence is usually driven by something real. Pitchers do not randomly gain or lose 5% on their whiff rate. Look for the cause — pitch-mix changes, velocity gains or losses, mechanical adjustments, health issues — and if you find one, trust the recent form over the season average.

When Season Averages Still Matter

Recent form is not always the better signal. There are specific situations where season averages — or even multi-season career data — should override the last few starts.

The first is small-sample noise. A pitcher who has made only two starts since returning from the injured list does not have enough recent data to establish a reliable trend. Two starts can produce wildly different outcomes depending on opponent quality, weather, and random variation. If the recent sample is fewer than four starts, I give it less weight and lean more heavily on the broader body of work.

The second is opponent-driven distortion. If a pitcher’s last three starts were all against lineups in the bottom five for team K-rate, his recent K totals will be inflated by the matchups rather than by an improvement in his stuff. Conversely, three starts against elite contact lineups will suppress his recent K numbers. Always check who the recent opponents were before concluding that a pitcher has changed.

The third is end-of-season fatigue. In September, pitchers who have carried heavy workloads throughout the season often show declining velocity and reduced pitch sharpness. Their recent form may look worse than their season average, and in this case the decline is real — but it may or may not persist into a specific late-season start depending on rest days, recovery, and the manager’s workload plan. Season averages provide a useful baseline for what the pitcher is capable of when healthy and rested, even if his most recent outings were fatigued.

A Blended Approach That Captures Both Signals

I do not choose between recent form and season averages — I blend them, with the weighting shifting based on context. My default weighting is 60% recent form (last 5 starts) and 40% season average. If the recent form diverges from the season average by more than 15% (e.g., season K-rate of 25% but recent K-rate of 30%), I investigate the cause. If I find a structural explanation — new pitch, velocity change, mechanical tweak — I shift to 70/30 in favour of recent form. If I cannot identify a cause, I stay at 60/40 and treat the divergence as potentially random.

This blended approach avoids the two worst errors in K-prop analysis: anchoring too heavily to stale season data when a pitcher has genuinely changed, and overreacting to two hot starts against weak opponents as if they represent a new normal. The blend is a compromise, and like all compromises, it sacrifices some accuracy in specific situations for better overall performance across the full range of scenarios.

One refinement that has improved my accuracy: instead of using raw K-rate for the recent-form input, I use SwStr% (swinging-strike rate) from the last five starts. SwStr% is less affected by opponent quality and game situation than raw K totals, making it a cleaner signal of how well the pitcher is throwing.
